The Master Assasin - Prologue
This is a piece of writing by Zak, an extremely talented writer in 6POB. Please read his work and feel free to comment on his extraordinary talent.
All was silent in the Tower of Terror. Only loud footsteps could be heard as a hooded figure pursued another man throughout the building. Short, sharp daggers were grasped in the man's hand and he was determined to catch his victim. Further ahead, the victim came to a dead end; he looked around with great worry, anxious for an escape path. Seeing his victim struggling at the dead end, the hooded figure peered up and spied something to his advantage. A brief passageway on the ceiling. He leapt up just in time, as his victim had turned to see if his chaser was near. Creeping along silently, he saw the man cowering with terror, and then he decided to jump down.
"Finally I have you," he whispered to his victim. "After all this time, I finally have you."
"P-P-Please," stammered the other man. He was short and obese, with a strong French accent.
"Please, spare me. I had nothing to do with this. I knew nothing."
"But you still betrayed me. You were my acqaintance. My helper. I confided in you all my details and my secrets, and you passed it on to my enemies?" the killer snarled, his knuckles whitening, hardening his grasp on the daggers. "The Baron nearly sent an army after me, thanks to you, and you will suffer for that! You know what happens to people who betray me."
And the Frenchman certainly did. Many men had fallen at this killer's hands because of betrayal and other things. The killer moved in for the final strike.
"No, no, no, please no, spare me, please!" begged the man, sobbing heavily at the killer's feet.
"You know I don't forgive." The assassin pulled his hood back, revealing his face. Jet black hair flattened back on his head. His emerald green eyes stood out the most of his distinct features. The killer knelt down to his victim, his dagger out. The Frenchman made one last fruitless attempt to escape through a window he had suddenly spotted, but the assassin swiftly plunged the dagger into the man's back.
"Goodbye."
Gasping, the man's final breath died away and his eyes gradually closed.
Hauling him up, the killer took one last look at the dead corpse and pushed him out of the window.
"Whoever betrays the Master Assassin will die at my hand," the killer declared, before climbing out of the window and into the dark streets below.

Our Avatar Hall Display
A huge thank you to Mrs Bradley for her time putting up Year 6's Hall Display. The topic work this term, using the film Avatar, has been brilliant. From mask artwork, creative writing, film trailers and tribal jewellery the display has managed to capture some of the fantastic work produced. Well done Y6 you've made your teachers very proud!
Shazmeen's paragraph
High, high up in the sky, the stunning sun reflected onto the turquoise deep ocean. From the edge of the shore, the view of the mysterious Hallelujah Mountains could be seen as they slowly floated above the horizon. A howling wind arrived that forced the twilight sea to create waves, high, huge waves that reached up to the shimmering sky...Suddenly, disturbing the tranquillity of the land, the nasty sky people had arrived.
Fiazah's paragraph
Emerging through the silver mist a shaft of sunlight revealed itself on the tropical Pandora. Hovering high in the sky, the helicopter flew towards the breathtaking Hallelujah mountains. The magical mountains danced as the wind whistled softly in and out of it’s long vines. Just then, Jake landed on his banshee, he looked out at the awe inspiring Pandora, his eyes widened in amazement.
Jamal's Avatar Writing
Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows of Pandora was somthing vile, a creature so hideous it would make the bravest of souls shiver with fear. This creatures name was Heatblister. His body was blood red, bursting with explosive anger and he was very short tempered. Neytiri had always suspected something on the darker side of Pandora so she decided to fly over and investigate she got on a banshee and flew off into the horizon. Little did she know of the horrors she would face...
Kayinat's Avatar Writing
The evil blood red Na'vi's had made Pandora so vile and abhorrent that if a bird visited, it would die helplessly just gazing at it. It was like a devil had invaded Pandora. Hometree was sleeping on the floor as the savages were on top enjoying its demise. The odour was so foul that even Hometree, lying dead in the fall, could smell it. It was washed out and colourless. All you could see was black and brown. This was because of the devastating disaster that the sky people inflicted, the red Na'vi's, these demons, loved every second of it.

Djanogly Library: Picture Books
Today Miss Warren from Djanogly Library came to visit. We were given a selection of picture books and had to choose which our favourites were. Miss Warren then read us The Whisperer by Nick Butterworth - it was really good. Here is a selection of our favourites
Which picture book did you like and why?

Queens Medical Centre
Today we went to the Queens Medical Centre Hospital in Nottingham. It was very interesting to learn about how to save lives and what to do when we are faced with an emergency. We can all help someone now by remembering DR's ABC.
D is for Danger
R is for response
S is for shout
A is for Airway
B is for Breathing
C is for CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation)
We were taught how to put someone in the recovery position and deal with someone who has been injured but isn't unconscious.
We were taken on a tour of the Children's Ward and shown lots of the different pieces of equipment that is used such as a pulse and oxygen monitor and the needle used for stitching up nasty cuts. Afterwards we all had our fingers put into plaster - it was lots of fun and we learnt a lot about what goes on in a hospital and most importantly how to cope if we see someone injured.

Avatar Masks
In our art lessons this term we have been making Avatar Masks. We really like them and they are fun to wear. If you want to make your own here's how:
How to make an Avatar Mask
1. Firstly, blow up a balloon
2. Mix pva glue with a little water to make a thin paste similar to yoghurt.
3. Next, tear some strips of newspaper and dip these in the glue.
4. Cover the whole of the balloon with 4 - 5 layers of gluey newspaper.
5. Leave it overnight so it can dry completely.
6. Once it is dry cut the balloon in half and then cut out two diamonds where the eyes will go.
7. Add more paper for the nose, cheeks, lips and eyebrows and using the same technique as before glue more paper over them to attach in place.
8. Leave to dry overnight.
9. Now paint the mask in blue (use darker shades to highlight shadows on cheeks and lips)
10. Decorate the mask with small white spots on the nose cheeks and forehead.
11. Finally attach coloured wool for the eyebrows and hair.
Enjoy wearing your mask!

Haka
Our Active Start sessions this week have been inspired by the Maori's Haka. It was performed to James Cameron by the New Zealand stuntmen, who worked on Avatar, as a sign of respect. James Cameron was inspired so much by this gesture he created a scene involving a Na'vi Haka although it never made the final cut of the film.
The Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. They have a culture uniquely their own (called Maoritanga) and part of their cultural heritage includes ta moko, a form of body modification historically used by the Maori to signify rank and social standing, enhance attractiveness and indicate eligibility for marriage.
A huge part of their culture is the Haka and performed by the men and women to signify a war cry, for amusement, as a hearty welcome to distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements or occasions.
Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora! Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!

Avatar
The door to the Cryogenics capsule opens with a loud, ear piercing hiss awakening your senses. Immediately, you are placed in a zero gravity chamber and after over 5 years of travelling from Earth, you are feeling tired and disorientated by your unfamiliar surroundings. Your body is aching from head to toe and you crave water. The next passing moments are a blur as you undergo a brief medical, change into your RDA standard issued clothing and brace yourself for re-entry into the Alpha Centauri's atmosphere. The ISV Venture Star shudders and grinds to a halt in the cargo bay of the Avatar Compound. Your heart is pounding out of your chest as you hear orders being loudly barked in your direction and fumbling nervously you place the oxygen mask over your head. Another deafening tremble travels through the ship as the cargo bay doors open and your eyes catch the first glimpses of natural light they have seen for several years. Slowly, you follow the rest of the men and women of RDA out onto the main deck and there you see your new home, a world so beautiful it takes your breath away... welcome to Pandora.

Survivor Day
6POB and 6KH went on a trip to Colwick Park and The Arches Adventure Base for a totally amazing Survivor Day. At Colwick Park we built shelters in the woods and went for a hike around the lake. We were really lucky that the weather was so sunny and we were able to have a picnic by the lake. We stopped for some team games and played with the parachute which was very fun.
In the afternoon, we went to Trent Bridge where we had to face up to some challenges by climbing a rock wall, abseil down a huge wall and work as a team on Jacob's Ladder. Even though it was hard - it was so much fun.

Inspiration
As we come to the end of our topic on Survivors we are already looking towards our next theme which is called Inspiration. Over the next couple of weeks we will be writing poetry and producing artwork based upon the world around us. We have been looking at the natural world to inspire our artwork this week and you can see some amazing detail in these beautiful pieces created by the children using pastels.

Survivor Science
During Carl's talk with us he mentioned lots of interesting facts and information about our planet. In order to get a better understanding of Greenland, travelling on an expedition and why it is important to care for our planet please answer the questions below
Why is it never completely dark in Greenland in the summer?
Why did one side of the skis need to be rough and one smooth?
Why did Carl need to eat so many calories?
What evidence did Carl see which showed the evidence of global warming?
What causes global warming?
How did the wind help Carl move across the ice? Could he use it to slow down?

Carl Alvey
Today Carl came in to talk to the children about his job as an Expedition Guide. He has travelled all over the world leading teams of people to fulfil their ambitions of reaching spectacular destinations. Carl has recently led teams to Mount Kilimanjaro, making 5 accents in one month and is about to take a team of teachers to the South Pole. He told us about his trip in May this year where he used wind power to travel across Greenland using a kite. At times it seemed to be a lot of fun but due to the effect of Global Warming the trip was very scary. The conditions were so bad due to the extent of unexpected melted ice that Carl and his team were unable to travel safely off the ice cap and had to be helicopter rescued. As Carl was only back in the UK for such a short time before he flies to Antarctica tomorrow we know we are very lucky to have had him spend the morning with us.
More information about his time in Greenland can be found at
Thank you Carl for a really interesting morning.
Forest Fields In the News!!
Our journalism unit had an exciting conclusion over half term as we were published in the Nottingham Post on Wednesday 27th October. We featured in the Education section on page 19 and it was fantastic to see our work written about by reporter Bryan Henesey. It covered our work on the Chilean Miners Rescue in the Daily News and Forest Fields Fortnightly's coverage of the 'earthquake that destroyed the school' just days before. There were some excellent quotes in the paper from Lilly, Saima and Alvena who spoke about what it felt like to be an Editor in charge of a team of reporters. There were some super photographs of some of our reporters (with supporting captions) and Zak's team had their work published too!

We remember the victims of the Aberfan Landslide Disaster
'In that silence you couldn’t hear a bird or a child.'
Aberfan resident
On Thursday 21st October it will mark 44 years since the tragic landslide disaster in Aberfan, South Wales, where 144 people were killed, 116 were children of Pantglas Junior School.
At 9.15 am on Friday, October 21, 1966 a waste tip slid down a mountainside into the mining village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. It first destroyed a farm cottage in its path, killing all the occupants.
At Pantglas Junior School, just below, the children had just returned to their classes after singing All Things Bright and Beautiful at their assembly. It was sunny on the mountain but foggy in the village, with visibility about 50 yards. The tipping gang up the mountain had seen the slide start, but could not raise the alarm because their telephone cable had been repeatedly stolen. (The Tribunal of Inquiry later established that the disaster happened so quickly that a telephone warning would not have saved lives.)
Down in the village, nobody saw anything, but everybody heard the noise. Gaynor Minett, an eight-year-old at the school, remembered four years later:
"It was a tremendous rumbling sound and all the school went dead. You could hear a pin drop. Everyone just froze in their seats. I just managed to get up and I reached the end of my desk when the sound got louder and nearer, until I could see the black out of the window. I can't remember any more but I woke up to find that a horrible nightmare had just begun in front of my eyes."
The slide engulfed the school and about 20 houses in the village before coming to rest. Then there was total silence.
144 people died in the Aberfan disaster: 116 of them were school children. About half of the children at Pantglas Junior School, and five of their teachers, were killed.

The Evening Post
On Monday 18th October we had a very interesting visit from Bryan Henesey, a reporter from The Evening Post, who came in to our class and speak about the newspaper industry. It was really good to hear how newspapers are put together and how a reporter spends his working day. It inspired many of us who enjoy writing articles as we heard how Bryan became a journalist and what he had to learn and study in order to become one. Bryan interviewed the Editors of the Press Teams to find out how they found the role and what the challenges were. Look out for our story coming soon to The Evening Post!!
Adrian Hayes: Polar Adventurer
Exciting news!!!
On Friday we are going to be talking to polar adventurer Adrian Hayes. Adrian is a Guiness world record holder for reaching the '3 Poles' (North Pole, South Pole and Mount Everest) in the shortest period of time in history and a second record for the longest unsupported snow-kiting expedition in Arctic history (Greenland).
Visit his website to read more about his amazing expeditions and generate any questions you may like to ask him.

Malcolm Leick
Last Thursday we were very lucky to have a visit from Malcolm Leick. Malcolm is a climber who has climbed mountains all over the world. We were able to see all the equipment that he needed to take with him when he went climbing. Malcolm told us about the time he climbed in the Lost Valley in Glencoe, Scotland in bad weather and had to dig a snowcave for the night. As a result of his adventure Malcolm was in the newspapers and he showed us some of the headlines from his story. He was really interesting to listen to and see what it takes to be a climber.
Forest Fields Fortnightly
This week at Forest Fields Fortnightly we have had a busy time reporting on recent events. In our Press Teams, led by the Editors and Sub Editors, we covered the huge story of the Forest Fields Earthquake. Presuming this would be our lead story, we were surprised to come into the office on Wednesday and be absorbed by the extraordinary rescue of the Chilean Miners. As a whole team we watched the amazing events unfold live on BBC news, we researched the history of how the miners came to be trapped in the mine and then conducted interviews with the Miners who came to visit 'Class Hope'. It was a happy story of survival that fitted brilliantly into our topic.
Below is one the brilliant pieces of reporting by Jamal.
FOREST FIELDS EARTHQUAKE
Earthquake causes terror at Forest Fields School
Report by Jamal
Yesterday, devestation struck in the heart of Nottingham as Forest Fields Primary School was destroyed by a terrible earthquake.
It was a normal Wednesday morning when suddenly the ground started trembling causing children to fall heavily to the floor. The rumble was like a beast roaring , the cracks that apperaed in the tarmac were like jaws trying to consume its prey.
Aftab(10), a pupil at the school, stated "As i got into the porta cabin it looked like they had been turned upside down, windows were shattered, everything had been thrown everywhere. I was shocked and before I knew it, the book case had landed on me and everything went dark.
Meanwhile outside, it was like demons were on the roof throwing slates trying to hit the children. The chimney had been thrown to the ground causing 50 serious injuries like Irfan's broken arm and Hammad's shattered leg.
Mr O'Brien (29),a class teacher, said "When the earthquake started I knew we had to do somthing so we gathered the children and ran down to the Forest Fields Recreation Ground where we knew nothing could hit us."
Friction
Scientist Professer McGregor, who works for the Disaster Research Centre in London, explained how this terrible event happened, "The two tectonic plates collided causing friction which then created energy in the earth that needed to be released. The aid workers were working at the best of their ability all day to try and restore the school to the way it was, thankfully they could confirm that no one had been killed. Yesterday afternoon, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, made a brief statement that he will do all he could to help the community of Forest Fields recover from this terrible disaster.
If you would like to donate money to the Forest Fields Earthquake appeal please visit their school website.
Natural Disaster Art
This term we've been reasearching natural disasters for our topic about Survivor's. We have been inspired to create some art about natural disasters. We did our art with charcoal, so it can blend in to the pictures such as Tornado,Hurricanes and Earthquakes. We did it so it can show off our exciting topic.

Forest Fields Earthquake
Last week we had a terrible earthquake that damaged all our school. We all saw the chimney fall down from the largest building and all the debris that fell on all of us (We are lucky to be alive!).We heard very strange noises as the tarmac crumbled beneath our feet, the windows shattered and the electric pylon fell to the floor sending electicity exploding everywhere. When we went inside the portacabins we saw they were completely destroyed and lots of people in our class were injured inside. Suddenly the roof caved in the classroom Aftab(10) he was under the roof when it fell and injured himself.

Goose Fair
Last week Goose Fair came to town. It's always a very exciting time of year. Here were some of the highlights for the children
"I like the ride which was called 'Stop! Danger!" My parents liked 'Accelerate'. I had some candy floss too." - Hammad
"I enjoyed 'The Booster'. The rest of my family went on the Big Wheel but I decided not to go as it was boring. I ate candy floss." - Zak
"The best ride was 'The Frisbee'. It swings and spins at the same time. I really like the candy floss. The bumper cars were fun because everyone was screaming and I kept on banging into my brother." -Alveena
"I like going early on because it's not crowded. I enjoy going on the rides, I sat on 'Twister' and 'Sizzler'. 'Twister' spins inside and out and all around and 'Sizzler' goes around and around and around and bangs in different ways. I had great fun." - Sara
"I was walking around grumpily, because I had just had a fright on one of the rides, when suddenly I saw Mr O'Brien! I sat on a ride called 'Frisbee' it gave me a stomach churning experience." - Shazmeen
"I think 'Chaos' was the best ride - it spins you around and makes you lean onto the person next to you, luckily it was my sister. I went on the bumper cars with my dad. I also saw Abbas." - Jamal
"First I went on a ride called 'City Hopper' it was a really good ride and I was quite scared. I even cried!! After that I went on 'Magic Mouse' it was like a big roller coaster and it was very scary and I made sure I kept my eyes closed all the way through. This was the best ride I had so much fun on it." -Lujain

Emotion Graphs
Last week we plotted the emotions of Joe and Simon at different points of the film Touching the Void. We chose our own scale of emotions from jubilant to hopeless and plotted how each character felt over the seven days. It was interesting to see how some of us thought how Joe and Simon felt on each day. It was also interesting to compare Joe and Simons feelings and how they may have reacted differently to the extraordinary events.
